In 1967, the U.S. Army, in cooperation with the Vietnamese, evacuated the villages of the Iron Triangle. The area was known as a staging area for the Viet Cong and the villagers were seen as givers of refuge and suppliers of support for them. By evacuating the area it could be defoliated and declared a free-fire zone, an open season on anything that moved. |
